Two years ago, the small Southern Ohio town of Isherwood seemed to change overnight. Businesses were abandoned or sold and townsfolk just up and moved away. Now, those who were left behind are trying to keep their lives afloat on the hope that things will improve someday. Finn Webb is one of those people. His construction and remodeling company he runs with his sister is one of the largest employers left in town. He’s felt his world teetering on the edge of failure for so long, that saving an injured dog is a bright spark of life he’s happy to hold onto. Cas Maine has come to Isherwood because that’s where the road led. He’s tired, hungry and desperate for the acceptance and safety he once had in his birth pack. But crossing into town sees him shifting into his wolf form and unable to shift back. Then he’s hit by a car only to be rescued by his one true mate. What follows is a series of events where a job outside of town lets Cas and Finn grow closer while also leading to the uncovering of numerous secrets held by several inhabitants of Isherwood. Everyone has a stake in this. And the stakes are high...

A bit of a surprise. Usually all these stories follow almost the same plot. But this one is a werewolf story just a bit different from the usual. A guy picks up a stray "dog" who can't gain his human form. The story engaged my interest from the start and would have been a 5 star review but the plot got a bit forced and unwieldy at the end. (I really do not like vampire stories and this one -- I thought needlessly -- brought in some toward the end). And you never did find out why and how that one "bad" guy sort of forced werewolves to stay in their animal form when they got to within several miles of him. Or exactly what motivated him.
But many other elements of the story kept you interested from the nephew who had been a victim of a commune, to the alpha of the pack who finds his mate at the end to the sister grieving the loss of her mysteriously missing (unknown to her) "werewolf" husband.

Isherwood Missy Welsh 9781611248531 Books Reviews
This was an absolutely unique and mesmerizing read. It's a different take on werewolves and a town that forces them to shift, so when Cas walks through the town he turns into his wolf and then he's hit by a car. Luckily he was found and taken care of by Finn. I don't want to summarize the whole story because there's many unexpected surprises that pop up and I don't want to give too much away. The author definitely has a very vivid and enchanting writing style. There were moments when I was laughing out loud and moments when I had tears (happy tears too) which says a lot about the execution of the story. I really like how Finn was accepting of Cas and his wolf because then the story can progress with the both of them working together instead of dragging out the not knowing who Finns pet dog (wolf) truly was. The characters were compelling and the book ended with another couple's point of view, which I definitely appreciated. This book had me totally enthralled.
Great read, great characterization and great story line. This book had my full attention from page one till the very end, which I so sorry to see. A complete home run as far as this reader is concerned! If you like/love paranormal love stories, you need to put this book on your top 10 want list, it is so worth it! An avid reader in Rock Tavern, NY.
This was a fun read, with humor and romance. Lots of background and characters introduced, setting up for the rest of the series
Cas Maine is a wolf shifter who wanders into Isherwood, Ohio to look for a new start, or at least a place to get some work and some cash before he moves to the next town after being run out of his birth pack. Unfortunately, crossing the town line forces him to shift into his wolf form and unable to shift back. To make matters worse, he gets hit by a car and the good Samaritan who helps him turns out to be his one true mate.
Finn Webb is trying to keep his business going in a town that has seen some tough times, especially in the last two years, but he is determined to make a life for himself, his sister and his nephew Kieran, even if the man he thought was the one for him has dumped him. Then he goes and rescues a dog who is the victim of a hit and run and although he’d never intended on having a pet, can’t seem to think of anything else to do but take the dog home.
How is Cas supposed to have a relationship with his mate if he can’t shift, why can’t he shift back anyway, and who is he supposed to go to in order to ask?!? The story is told from their alternating points of view.
If you like shifter stories, you will probably like this one, but I’m happy to say, this one does have a different angle to it.
Cas was chased out of his birth pack because he is gay, he’s been on the run, he’s tired, broke and Isherwood seems as good a place as any to stop and see about work before moving on. Except then he is forced to shift when he gets into town and cannot shift back, which is a bit terrifying since he is not on home ground, he knows there is a pack near town, but he can’t present himself to the alpha as a visitor if he doesn’t know why he shifted! When Finn picks him up, it’s good in a way, because someone wants to take care of him, but when he realizes Finn is his mate, that complicates matters and makes it even more imperative to Cas that he needs to find a way to shift back!
For Finn, he was dumped by a boyfriend and has been alone ever since, just trying to keep his business going for him and his family of his sister and nephew Kieran, especially since his brother in law disappeared two years before. The disappearance has been hardest on Kieran, who got involved with a youth group that has left him withdrawn from almost everyone except his Mom and uncle, rarely going outside at all. Finn’s family is the most important thing to him, then all of a sudden, he has a dog!
When Cas is approached by what he knows is another wolf one morning, he is torn, stay with his mate, or possibly find out what is going on. He takes off after the wolf, promising to come back to Finn once he knows why he cannot shift back on his own.
And so begins the mystery that is Isherwood.
I really enjoyed this story, it moved at a good pace, had great characters, and if you read the short story, Yours Forever, the characters from that story make an appearance in this one as well, but you don’t have to read the one to read the other. I do hope there will be follow up books though, because there is the mystery of what had a hold on Isherwood to affect the shifters the way it did, and if it could happen again, in other shifter communities.
I liked the different perspective the author took with shifter stories, the idea of latent abilities in people and why they may or may not shift, or could be alphas and all, it was a very interesting angle, which is another reason I hope there will be more books to come!
There are some incredibly hot scenes between Cas and Finn, and although their relationship moves very fast, even for fiction, at the same time, Finn is such an open character, and so willing to see there are other aspects to life, that maybe it just makes sense for him. It would have been nice to have more scenes of Finn and Cas getting to know each other the way there are scenes with Finn and Kieran, but I also think what you learn of them apart from each other, is also what pulls them together. It also would have been good to have more scenes with Kieran when he meets his mate, and how he deals with the news of his family tree, but again, he is almost as open as his Uncle, so it also makes sense that he would just go with what he feels and senses.
I'm a major Missy Welsh fan, so anyone else who is will like this book, but if you also like when authors do something a little different with the genre while still giving you a happy couple, then I think you will like this story.
At first glance, this book may seem like a typical fated-mate werewolf tale, but there are elements that set it apart. Due to some unique circumstances, Cas meets his human mate, Finn, when he’s in wolf form. Thankfully, he looks to Finn like a stray dog, so Cas is able to observe his mate for a bit before meeting him as human, and some of their early moments together are priceless. Add in a few surprises I’m not going to spoil, a Romanian werewolf with a special ability, a troubled young man in search of something, and a good villain, and you have yourself an engrossing tale, and a great start to the Isherwood series!
